Director /Producer/Choreographer CJay Philip is widely diverse in her skill and experience with many styles of live and televised productions. As a performer she began her professional career as a dancer in companies like Maude Baum and Company (Modern), EBA Dance Theatre (Theatre dance) and Burundi Dance Troupe (African). She moved on to have a successful Broadway and touring career in shows like Dreamgirls (Tour), Big the Musical (Broadway) Street Corner Symphony (Broadway) and most recently Hairspray (Broadway) where she was a Dance Captain for the touring and Broadway companies.

 

 

 

CJay is frequently sought out for her talent in concept development for live productions. CJay has produced and choreographed literally hundreds of industrials and special event in arenas across the country including The Staple Center, Boston Arena, the Dallas Convention Center, The Javits Convention Center the Washington Convention Center and more. Some events include The Philadelphia Presidential Summit, the 2000 Emmy Award™ winning NBC broadcast of the McDonalds Gospel Fest, various performances for the Senate and House of Representatives, several live performances for R&B, Pop and Latin recording artist including Speech (Arrested Development).  CJay has also directed and choreographed for numerous corporate events with Bloomberg Inc. and Barkley Kalpak and Associates. When asked to direct a world conference in LA at The Staple Center, CJay staged international dance pieces from Australia, China, Africa and Latin America as well as American pop culture.

 

 

In 1998 CJay was asked to become the Program Director of the Hope For Kids Schools Of The Arts in Washington Heights where she lead a staff of 50 teachers and a student enrollment of over 200. She was instrumental in curriculum development that teaches inner city youth valuable character building lessons while participating in different art forms like music, dance, visual arts, and writing.  The School Of The Arts has received national recognition and accolades and CJay continues to act as an advisor for the program.  CJay was also brought in to add her professional experience to the famed Philadelphia Story Tree Gang which then went from a local puppet-show musical with kids teaching kids about health issue, into an annual international workshop bringing hundreds of young people from around the world together each summer in key cities in the US and teaching them to put on a 45min musical addressing many issue that effect our youth like conflict resolution, literacy, abstinence and volunteerism. CJay has trained directors and choreographers to duplicate The Story Tree Gang in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, San Diego, Los Angeles and Jamaica. CJay is currently developing a similar program scheduled to tour Europe.

 

Some of CJay’s musical theatre credits include choreographing productions of Once On This Island, The Who’s Tommy, Your Arms To Short To Box With God (NJPAC), Once Upon A Mattress, The History of Gospel Music, Dickens on Ice, Oliver and more.

CJay is the author of the musicals No Man Can Stop The Tide, Carmen A Bigger Bounce touring Europe and the hilarious one woman show Bus Trippin’. She also conceived, writes and directs the popular variety showcase CJay’s Gospel Groove.
